Concert Review: Journey has fans believin' at Mohegan Sun Casino

UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- For many bands, losing a member as important as the lead singer - especially one whose voice adorned their greatest hits - represents the beginning of the end.

But if Journey's performance at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Friday night served as any indication, it can also breathe new life into a band.

The recent Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame inductees treated concertgoers to a 16-song set stretching nearly two hours in length, mixing up a career-spanning greatest hits compilation with refreshing takes on familiar rock concert cliches.

Opening up the show with a familiar combination of keyboards and guitarist Neal Schon's low-end heavy power chord thump, the band blasted off into "Separate Ways."

With vocalist Arnel Pineda at the helm - a job he's held since being plucked out of obscurity via YouTube in 2007 - and Schon's guitar pyrotechnics as ear-catching as when he burst onto the scene as Carlos Santana's sideman in 1971, the band established early that they haven't softened with age.
